Abu Camp
Activities - Okavango Delta - Botswana
Elephant back safaris on the six adult elephants with the family
of youngsters in tow. Generally two elephant back safaris are
offered daily. Each safari is accompanied by a professional
guide who is licensed by the Botswana government and has years
of experience with African wildlife. Saddles are soft and
comfortable. The elephants walk at approximately five miles an
hour, and each safari lasts two to three hours.
The Okavango Delta in Botswana is one of the world's largest
inland river systems. The Okavango River, born in the uplands of
Angola to the Northwest, flows into and fans out across the
Kalahari Desert to form an immense inland delta of lagoons,
channels and palm filled islands. This fragile ecosystem remains
one of the world's unspoilt and beautiful wildernesses where a
vast diversity of animals and birds can be seen. |

Wildlife typically
seen at Abu's camp on your elephant rides, include any of the
plains game that are abundant in the area, from giraffe, zebra,
elephant, impala, tssessebe, and lechwe to wildebeest, buffalo
and warthogs.
The camp's
resident pride of lion should announce their presence at some
time during your stay, and it is very likely that you will hear
them calling at night, a thrilling sound as you lie in the
comfort and safety of your tent. |

Knowledgeable guides
point out the incredible minutia of the bush, the little things
that make it so unique. Your elephant mahout is also an
experienced guide and he will be able to answer your questions
as you meander through the floodplains at the elephant's steady
pace.
From the backs of
the elephants you are always assured of seeing something, and an
amazing world reveals itself from this high and secure vantage
point.
All the elephants in the riding herd at Abu Camp has been
rescued from captivity in zoos or safari parks or from calling
operations in neighboring countries. |

sweater or jacket, and long sleeve shirts for the day.
Short sleeve shirts, and shorts are recommended for the summer
months.
Canvas, suede or leather walking boots are essential, with
lighter shoes for the evenings.
Dinner dress is casual.
Hats and sunglasses are a must for protection against the strong
